Bounce back win at Mid-Ohio for
2nd National win of the year 2006!
Going back to Mid-Ohio was exactly what the doctor ordered
to get back on track in SM National competition. This year
the track has been repaved and that would mean it was almost
like starting over at a whole new racing venue for my third
SCCA national event of the year. We had arrived early to do
the test day to get familiar with the new pavement, however
we were greated with rain showers on Friday. That would mean
that Saturday's Qualifying would be my first laps on the new
surface.
Qualifying went extremely well, as I was able to adapt to
the new surface fairly quickly putting my red #17 Spec Miata
on pole position for Sunday's race. Mark Bennett of Ohio
would start second.

Sunday's race was not very eventful but still very
challenging, as a combination of Mark Bennett hounding me
the entire race and some pretty nasty lapped traffic kept me
on my toes the entire race distance. I was fortunate enough
to lead every lap of the race and take the victory.
Niki's event would not end quite as well as mine, but he
did a great job none the less. The rain unfortunately
returned for a short period of time on Sunday just prior to
Niki's race and left the track just starting to dry as
Formula Continental headed out onto the track. Niki decided
to go with rain tires while 2nd place runner David
Wietzenhauf chose slicks. Nick was building a lead until
about the 1/2 way point of the race, when the sun came out
and the track began drying very rapidly. With just a handful
of laps remaining David overtook Niki for the win. |
